Program Overview

With the genomic revolution well underway, the need for trained medical professionals with genomic skills has never been greater.

The UBC Graduate Certificate in Genomic Counselling and Variant Interpretation is a unique education program and offers advanced, in-depth training in bioinformatics and genomic counselling. The practical and rigorous curriculum builds on genetic counselling foundations, and is designed to upskill genetic counsellors/genetic nurses in bioinformatics and genomic counselling.

This flexible 100% online program comprises four courses, totalling 12 academic credits that can be completed in as few as 20 months, or can be extended over a longer period. Students can expect to spend approximately 5 – 8 hours per week, during the 13-week period the course is offered.

Students who successfully complete the program not only gain key competencies in genomics, they come away prepared to offer enhanced healthcare and counselling to patients, whether in a clinical, laboratory, teaching, or research setting.

Courses in this program are created and taught by UBC faculty and experts, as well as industry experts in genomics. With genetic counsellors involved in every step of the curriculum development, the program is tailored to the unique needs of our profession.
